Sharks Tooth Diving
Venice is rich in ancient, underwater fossil beds dating back millions of years. Venice was once a giant corral reef with a plethora of breading fish whales turtles dolphins all types of marine species. The giant reefs brought in all types of fish species including whales which came to these local waters to breed and have offspring. All the marine species which called Venice home, brought in the megalodon sharks and different shark species to feed on all the life. When the whales came in to breed, Megalodons and other sharks species followed to feed. When a shark feeds they loose a few teeth every time they feed so over millions of years of sharks feeding in this area they were loosing teeth every time and over time these teeth fossilized and built up in our local waters which is why Venice FL is the sharks tooth capital of the world.
In addition to sharks teeth, we find whale teeth, whale vertebrates, dolphin teeth, turtle fossils, and a variety of different marine fossils. We also find all sorts of land mammals as well including horse teeth, giant ground sloth fossils, saber-tooth cat fossils, woolly mammoth teeth, and fossilized mastodon teeth, alligator bones, and other unique fossils. The reason we find land mammals underwater is because Florida was also submerged underwater and the land extended out much much father then it does now. As the seafloor was once land, it is common to find more than sharks teeth on our dives. You never know what you may find. It’s a tressure hunt an exciting dive and fun for the whole family.
